| Gateway Of India. | |
| The Gateway of India, a yellow basalt arch of triumph officially 'opened' in 1924 is situated at Apollo Bunder. This is about 2.4 kms from the Churchgate Railway Station. It commemorates the royal visit of King George V and Queen Mary in 1911. From here one can go by ferry boats around the Harbour and to Elephanta Caves. There are many luxury boats which wlll take visitors around the Harbour. This service is available till 8 pm. |  |
| It is a pleasure to visit the spot in the evenings. One can reach here by buses and taxis from any part of the city. There is a statue of Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the l7th century founder of the independent Kingdom of Maharastra. | |
| Taj Mahal Hotel |
| The majestic overlooks Apollo Bunder and has great views of the gateway from its top floor Apollo Bar. This Mumbai institution was built in 1903 by J.N. Tata, one of the city's great Parsi benefactors, supposedly after he was refused entry to one of the city's European hotels on account of being 'a native.' The streets behind the Taj Mahal Hotel are the travellers' centre of Mumbai. |

| On the northern promontory of Back Bay is the expensive residential area of Malabar Hill, favoured for its cool breezes and fine views over Back Bay. The colonial bungalows that peppered the hillside in the 18th century have now been replaced by the jerry-built apartment blocks of Mumbai's nouveau riche. | |
| The formal Hanging Gardens (or Pherozeshah Mehta Gardens) on top of the hill are an interesting spot to study the courting rituals of coy Indian couples nestled among the bestial topiary, and there are superb views of the city from neighbouring Kamala Nehru Park. Beside the Hanging Gardens, but carefully shielded from view, are the Parsi Towers of Silence. |  |
| Towards the southern end of the promontory is the temple of Walkeshwar, the Sand Lord. According to the Ramayana, Rama rested here on his way to rescue Sita in Lanka and constructed a lingam of sand at the site. The original temple was built about 1000 years ago, though the current structure is much more recent. Just below the temple is the Banganga Tank which was built on the spot where water spouted when Rama shot a bana (arrow) into the ground. Bathing pilgrims and scores of curious kids make this neighbourhood an oasis from the world of luxury apartment blocks towering above. | |
| Fort |
| The extravagant blend of Victorian gothic buildings in the Fort district of Mumbai, reminds one of the Birtish Raj, because of its resemblances to the industrial cities of northern England. This lively area occupies the site of the old British-built fort and is the established commercial centre of Mumbai. It's jampacked with commuters, street stalls and the grand facades of 19th century British institutions and trading houses. Other gems include Bombay University, the High Court, the BMC building and stately Horniman Circle, laid out around the sole surviving section of Bombay's original Cotton Green. St Thomas' Cathedral near Horniman Circle was begun as early as 1672 but remained unfinished until 1718. Its whitewashed interior contains poignant colonial memorials. |
| Nehru Centre (Nehru Planetarium) | |
The Centre is named after Pt. Jawaharlal Nehru, late Prime Minister of India. It was erected at Dr. Annie Besant Road. It was inaugurated on December 12, 1976 by late Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. |

The Planetarium offers a new opportunity for fostering the scientific temper. The imposing Nehru Planetarium building has already become a landmark in Mumbai. It has three floors with a total area of 5000 sq. meters and is fully air-coiditioned. Latest modern machinery and equipments are being brought to attract the people and lot of new science programmes are introduced. It is a must for every Indian and foreign tourist to visit the centre. |
| The Mint |
| It stands near the Town Hall and was erected in 1829. It consists of many departments for melting metal stamping gold for Kolar Gold Mines. It also manufactures dyes, medals and standard dyes, weights and measures. |
| Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus (Victoria Terminus) | |
| Victoria Terminus, the city's most exuberant Gothic building, looks more like a lavishly decorated cathedral or palace than anything as mundane as a transportation depot. Carvings of peacocks, gargoyles, monkeys, elephants and British lions are mixed up among the buttresses, domes, turrets, spires and stained-glass windows. |  |
| Topping
it all is a 4m (13ft) high image of 'Progress' - though the rest of the building looks
more like a celebration of Pandemonium. Don't wait until you have to catch a train to see
it. It is a terminus for the local train and inter-state services of the Central Railway.
This building was designed by F.W. Stevens and completed in 1888. Today it handles thirty
lakhs passengers and thousand trains every day. The General Post Office is close to it. |

| Rajabai Clock Tower |
| It is situated in the compound of Mumbai University and is named after Rajabai, mother of Premchand Raichand, famous banker and merchant of the l9th century. The Clock Tower is 280 ft. high and it costed Rs. 3 lakhs to erect it. The top of the cupola is ornamented with sixteen statues. At the lower part eight other statues depict various Indian castes. |
| Veer Jijamata Bhosle Udyan |
| It is also known as Victoria Garden. This is the zoo of Mumbai city and is situated at Byculla. It has an area of 48 acres in the garden. The zoo contains a wide variety of birds and animals. It is open to public on all days except Mondays with usual entrance fee. You can enjoy camel, elephant and horse ride after 4 p.m. every day. Besides that you can enjoy boating too.Outside Udyan you will find a nice Museum which is known as Albert Museum, it consists of a reference library and Museum specimens of Indian paintings, metalware etc. |
| Flora Fountain (Hutatma Chowk) | |
| Erected in 1869 in honour of a British Governor of Bombav, Sir Bartre Frere, it is situated in the heart of the city. Hutatma Chowk means the square of sacrifice, it is named in the memory of 105 Martyrs killed in the movement of Samyukta Maharashtra. Previously it was known as Floura Fountain. This is one of the busiest area in the city. The footpaths are packed with hawkers selling foreign goods. This is a business centre, Nearby are Victorla Terminus and the Municipal Corporation Building. |  |
| Marine Drive | |
| Built on land reclaimed from Back Bay in 1920, Marine Drive runs along the shoreline of the Arabian Sea from Nariman Point past Chowpatty Beach to the foot of Malabar Hill. It's one of Mumbai's most popular promenades and a favourite sunset-watching spot. You certainly won't be loitering on the sea wall long before you're engaged in conversation, even if it's with someone offering to show you how well their monkey can breakdance. |  |

promenade is lined with decaying Art Deco apartments just begging for a paint manufacturer
to prove what their product can do to brighten up an area. Tourist brochures are fond of
dubbing it the Queen's Necklace, because of the dramatic curve of its streetlights at
night. It's less spectacular during the day, though there are plans afoot to beautify the
area. |

| This was built in 1955. It is modern style building having six storeyed and Annexe at its back. It represents novel features of modern architecture and structural engineering. The offices of Maharashtra Government are housed here. Nearby is a very beautiful structure of Yogakshema. Offices of Life Insurance Corporation and All India Radio are also existing there. |  |
| Municipal Corporation Building |
| It is 'V' shape building located opposite the Victoria Terminus. It was first erected in 1893 on a triangular piece of land. The building was designed by Mr. F.W. Stevens in the Gothic style wlth an oriental motiff introduced into the Gothic architecture which gives a very pleasing appearance. The oriental effect is created by the Indian domes surmounting the Gothic towers, The main central tower is nearly 255 ft. high and is surmounted by a masonry dome which can be seen from any part of Mumbai. |

| Mani Bhawan is situated at 19, I,abuman Road. Gamdevi is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi's memory owing to his long association with it. The activties are conducted by the Gandhi Samarak Nidhi aim at promoting Gandhian studies and research in Gandhian thought and its application. There used to be weekly prayer in the evening on every Friday.There is a big library consisting of Gandhi's writings and books belonging to his life in many different languages. The picture gallery on the ground floor give glimpses of Gandhiji in Mani Bhawan. It is open to public between 9.30 am to 6 pm. Sunday and Monday afternoon are closed. |

| It is reclaimed from the sea and now built over wlth Mumbai's tallest and most elegent skyscrapers. It is one of the most beautiful and clean area of Mumbai. There are modern designed buildings namely Air India, Express Tower, Oberoi Sheraton Hotel, State Bank of India and Shipping Corporation of India. It is called Manhattan of New York. |
| Mahalaxmi Race Course |
| This Race Course is on the eastern side of Hornby Vellard. It was built under the direction of Major. J.E. Hughes. During the season which starts fom the beginning of November and lasts upto the middle of April, Races are held on every Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. The season of excellent sport here attracts huge crowds and heavy betting. |

| Very near to Flora Fountain this massive structure of stone 250 feet high is a 16 storied structure for overseas communication, modernized and electronically connected to the Inmarsat satellite station at Pune. It is the only Internet Service Provider in India. |  |

| It is the terminus of Western Railway suburban line. It is four storeyed. There is underground passage built to cross the road here. Nearby are Eros Theatre located just opposite and the Industrial Assurance Building on the South-west of the Railway Station. |
